TROY offers conference for veterans

TROY – Helping veterans plan and start businesses is the goal of Troy University’s Small Business Development Center in its “Book Your Flight to Business Success: A Veteran’s Conference.”

The one-day conference will be held at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, Building 5700, Room 284 on May 29, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Participants will be provided the most up-to-date information on how to start a business, how to finance a business and how to do government contracting.

Karen Zhassanbay, chief communications officer for the Center for Veterans Enterprise in Washington, D.C., a U.S. Veterans Affairs Office department, will explain the verification program and how it will impact veterans in the future.

“Things are changing quickly in some areas of government contracting and veteran and service disabled owned business status verification is one of those areas. We are lucky to have Ms. Zhassanbay to explain the verification program.” said Sandra Lucas, Director of the Troy University Small Business Development Center.

Also on hand for the conference will be Brent McMahan, a senior area manager with U.S. Small Business Administration, who will explain various SBA loan programs, requirements and procedures. He will also address the Stimulus Act with regard to SBA programs.

Other topics that will be covered during the conference include start-up steps for new businesses, the need of good planning, the role of the business plan and an introduction of how to do government contract work.

The event is co-sponsored by the Army Community Service Employment Readiness Program, Troy University’s Center for International Business and Economic Development and Small Business Development Center.
