Reading Initiative at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women

Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, 12 noon, Tutwiler Prison: A media availablity will be held inside the prison to highlight a joint reading initiative between Troy University, Ingram State Technical College, the Alabama Department of Corrections and the Alabama Humanities Foundation.

An interview session will begin at 12 p.m., with the actual class beginning at 1 p.m.

Professors from Troy University, Department of Corrections officials, and representatives of Ingram State and Alabama Humanities will be available for interview, as well as inmate representatives from the class.

MEDIA PLANNING TO COVER THIS EVENT MUST RSVP TO THE OFFICE OF UNIVERSITY RELATIONS NO LATER THAN 5 P.M. ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30. RESPOND VIA EMAIL TO CLUSK@TROY.EDU.

Parking for media will be available in the North parking lot located to the left-front entrance to the Tutwiler facility. A PHOTO ID IS REQUIRED TO ENTER THE FACILITY. Still and video cameras are allowed inside the facility but PERSONAL CELL PHONES, iPHONES, etc. ARE PROHIBITED. MEDIA SHOULD ARRIVE AT THE FACILITY AT 11:45 a.m.

Program Background:

Ingram State Technical College and Troy University are providing a reading initiative to designated inmates in 11 sessions, led by Troy University English professors. The program is sponsored and supported with a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, and approved by the Alabama Department of Corrections. Current plans are to continue the program beyond the pilot period.

Throughout the course, inmates read and discuss various selections that promote a wider understanding of literature and its application to daily life.
