DOTHAN – A Dothan automotive dealer who received Alabama’s 2008 TIME Quality Dealer Award will deliver the keynote address to graduates at Troy University’s commencement on the Dothan campus on Dec. 14.

Mike Schmitz, owner of the Mike Schmitz Automotive Group, will speak to about 100 graduates who will receive diplomas during the ceremony that begins at 3 p.m. in the Dothan Civic Center.

Schmitz is a 30-year veteran of the automotive industry. He owns the Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Mazda and Suzuki franchises as Mike Schmitz Automotive Group in Dothan, and also owns Toyota of Dothan, along with John Mitchell. Considered the auto industry’s most prestigious retail honor, the TIME Quality Dealer Award recognizes outstanding franchised new car dealers, selected by state and metro dealer associations across the country, who have met high business standards and who have been active in community affairs. The award is presented to about 50 dealers each year.

Schmitz is currently the chairman of the ENVISION initiative’s Regionalism Task Force, a panel made up of area mayors and county commissions working to identify and correct community problems. He also serves on the board of directors of the Southeast Alabama Medical Center Foundation and is the chairman and organizer of Trinity Bank. Schmitz is also past chairman of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce, Dothan Houston County Rotary Club, Wiregrass Children’s Home, American Heart Association’s Heart Walk and the five-county United Way, raising a record $2.5 million in 2006.
