TROY - The Troy University Symphony Band, under the direction of Dr. Mark J. Walker, will perform a student's arrangement of the "Star Spangled Banner" at the 43rd Southeastern United States Clinic and Honor Bands.
The band's annual concert takes place Friday, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. inside the Claudia Crosby Theater, which is free and open to the public.
Justin McCall, a 20-year-old junior from Prattville and the music department's head librarian, recently wrote an arrangement of the "Star Spangled Banner," his first attempt at writing for the symphony band.
McCall, who also performs in the symphony band, has a history of writing marching band compositions, but this posed a new challenge for him.
"You have to be really careful with something like the 'Star Spangled Banner'," McCall said. "I think it's a pretty piece. I'm happy with how it turned out, and the symphony band plays it so well."
McCall is especially excited to hear a recording of the performance. "It will be great to hear the finished product," he said.
