Retention: YOU are the Key!
Instructor Strategies for Retaining Students

Kathleen Akers

  • Kathleen Akers (Site Director for Global Campus @ Clarksville, Tennessee) contacted the Educational Technology department in early January 2011 to discuss methods for her team to be notified of First Time Troy Students that were regionally located in her area of responsibility.  She had been working on a project for a Comprehensive Retention Program for the SE Region of Global Campus.  Her discussions lead to the creation of the First Time Student Flag in Starfish.

Dr. Dayna McDaniel

  • Dr. McDaniel is an innovator and phenomenally student-centered. She uses BB, Wimba, Pronto, and many other technologies for outstanding instruction and advising (she even advises online students that are not in her courses or not her assigned advisees if requested!) She shares her shells and resources with everyone and has mentored numerous peers on the MPA faculty team on technologies ranging from Wimba to Windows movie-making to help faculty better connect with their own students and advisees. She uses her tech-skills to advise MPA students from many sites in the Southeast region, and they love her Pronto office hours and online advising resources. Last but not least, she has recently undertaken an innovative effort to reach out to all new incoming MPA e-students and provide them with a virtual and real-time orientation. She is the very definition of student-centered.
  • Outstanding Instructor, probably most knowledgeable of all instructors I've been in contact in Distance learning. Was one of the first is distance learning(1990)taught me and many others how to teach in that arena. has the respect of others in this area and has presented conferences papers/local speeches on the subject. She is always available to talk with students also using Skype.
  • Outstanding student interaction and positive attitude.
  • Sharing technology with faculty developing a real-time virtual advising for online students creating orientation program for new MPA students using Wimba and Pronto
