- Federal Financial Aid Changes 2012-2013
Dear Students,
Below are the changes made to financial aid by the Budget Control Act of 2011, Consolidated Appropriations Act 2012, Department of Education and Congress.
Please read this information carefully as you prepare for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Federal Application For Free Student Aid:
- All applicants completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid are encouraged to utilize the IRS Data retrieval.
- All Financial Aid applicants are required to submit a photo ID.
- Applicants selected for a verification review process are required to submit: W-2(s) and signed IRS Tax Transcripts. Income Tax Returns (1040, 1040A and 1040EZ) are NO longer acceptable. Tax transcripts can be requested by calling 1-800-908-9946 or visiting http://www.irs.gov. Please wait two weeks after filing your income tax return before requesting a transcript.
Federal Pell Grant Eligibility Changes:
- In December 2011, the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2012 (Public Law 112-74) was signed which impacted the Federal Pell Grant Program. Beginning in fall of 2012 students are now limited to 12 semesters (or 600%) of Pell Grant eligibility during their lifetime. This change affects all students regardless of when or where they received their first Pell Grant. Students that are currently receiving the Pell Grant in the academic year 2011-2012 and have already used 600% of their Pell Grant eligibility will no longer be eligible to receive a Pell Grant starting fall 2012.
- You may view your Pell Grant used by logging onto www.NSLDS.ed.gov .
- Whether you have used all of your Pell Grant eligibility or only half, please be conscious about the lifetime limit of the Pell Grant when changing majors and or scheduling classes.
- Students with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of 4,996 or higher will not be eligible for Federal Pell Grant for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Federal Loan Changes:
- Graduate/Doctorate Nursing Practitioner students will no longer be eligible for Federal Subsidized loans beginning July 1, 2012. The graduate loan limit remains at $20,500 in Federal Unsubsidized loan.
- Loan Fee increases: more fees will be taken out of your loan before you receive funds. Fees for Federal loans will increase to 1%. Fees for Federal Plus Loans will increase to 4%.
- Interest Rate Increases: the interest rate for undergraduates will increase to 6.8% on subsidized loans. The rate will remain the same at 6.8% for unsubsidized loans for graduate students.
After you leave school:
- The interest subsidy offered during the six month grace period on subsidized loans is eliminated for new loans made after July 1, 2012 and before July 1, 2014. Loan repayment still begins six months after you are no longer enrolled at least half-time, but interest that accrues during those six months will no longer be subsidized by the federal government. The student will be responsible for the interest during the grace period.
Thank You,
Office of Student Financial Aid
