National SMART Grant

An eligible student may receive a National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (National SMART Grant) of $4,000 for each of the third and fourth academic years of study. To be eligible for each academic year, a student must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Be a Federal Pell Grant recipient;
  • Be enrolled full-time in a degree program;
  • Be enrolled in a four-year degree-granting institution;
  • Major in physical, life or computer science, engineering, mathematics, technology, or a critical foreign language as listed in the USDE Eligible Fields of Study; and
  • Have at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale (as set forth in regulations to be promulgated soon) in the coursework required for the student’s major.
IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE

  • May 2006
    Interim regulations for National SMART Grants will be made available for institutional review.
  • November 2006
    Final regulations should be received by November 1, 2006. Pell eligible students pursuing degrees in an eligible major will be notified of their award.
  • December 2006
    The USDE will allow us to be reimbursed for any SMART Grant funds placed on student accounts.
  • January 2007
    Final 0607 software was loaded into the Test account for Smart Grants.
  • February 2007
    The Financial Aid Office will begin testing in the test account for Smart Grants. Testing resulted in discovering a bug in the software delivered by our software vendor, Datatel. We are waiting for a fix to be installed by our IT Department.
  • March 2007

We are waiting for a fix to be installed by our IT Department.Troy University will verify student eligibility (major, cumulative GPA, and full-time enrollment status) and Student Financial Services (Student Accounts) will place funds on students accounts after the bug is fixed.
