Many economists find themselves employed by the Federal Reserve System as well as other federal, state and local government agencies. On the state level, a professional economist with a graduate degree can find career opportunities at tax commissions, departments of banking and insurance and state public service or utilities commissions. There are also many career options within the private sector and with public policy institutes and think tanks.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects the demand for economists with graduate-level educations will see a 14 percent increase between 2012 and 2022. According to the BLS, the national median salary for a master’s degree-holding economist was $91,860 per year in 2012. More recently, in February 2014, the BLS estimated the employment of economists in the private sector had increased by 57 percent between 2009 and 2012.
