Business Dean Don Hines loses battle with cancer

Dr. Don C. Hines, who served as the dean of the Sorrell College of Business, passed away at his home on Aug. 26 after a battle with cancer.

The Ripley, MS, native was appointed dean in 2007, a post he had vacated in 1994 to become president of the University of West Alabama.

Dr. Hines was instrumental in starting a rodeo team at both The University of West Alabama, where the rodeo complex bears his name, and Troy University.

He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Mississippi State University and completed his doctorate in economics at Kansas State University. He was a commissioner on the Alabama Water Resource Commission and was former chairman of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterways Development Council.

In 1998, he was awarded the State Distinguished Service Award by the Alabama Association of Conservation Districts.  From 2001-2006, Dr. Hines served as TROY’s Intercollegiate Rodeo Team Advisor.

“Dr. Hines provided the type of visionary leadership to not only TROY, but also to other institutions that blaze the trail so that others may follow,” said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor. “His leadership at TROY has set the Sorrell College of Business at the forefront of business education worldwide and has provided its students with the tools to be successful in a global marketplace.”

TROY Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ed Roach, who also is a former UWA president, was a close friend to Dr. Hines.

“Dr. Hines will be deeply missed.  Troy University has lost a great Trojan,” said Dr. Roach.

A memorial service for Dr. Hines was held in the Claudia Crosby Theater on the Troy Campus on Oct. 5.

Special presentations were made during the memorial service by Chancellor Hawkins, Student Government Association President Jonathan Davis and TROY Rodeo Coach Josh Simmons. Special remarks were made by Dr. Roach and Dr. Clifford Eubanks, a former dean of the Sorrell College of Business.

The impact Dr. Hines had on students also was evident during the memorial service.
Elvin Huseynov, who graduated in May with a Master of Business Administration degree, described Dr. Hines as a great person and educator.

“I feel very lucky that I had a chance to meet and work with such a great person as Dr. Hines,” said Huseynov, who is from Azerbaijan.

The Don C. Hines College of Business Scholarship has been established in his memory. Donations can be made online by going to the Giving to TROY link at www.troy.edu. Donations also can be mailed to the Troy University Foundation, 1120 US Highway 231, Troy, AL 36082.
