Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr.

The cover story of this edition of the Troy University magazine spotlights a unique and interesting partnership we have signed with Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University (COMU) in Turkey. While we have dozens of international partner universities, COMU is the only one located a scant 18 miles from the site of the ancient city of Troy (Troia). I am excited by the opportunity to partner with fellow Trojans!

This issue also reports on a new partnership spearheaded by Dr. Manuel H. “Manley” Johnson, a model TROY alumnus. He has supported his alma mater with words and actions. He has achieved international recognition as an economist. He has served his country both in the U.S. Army and as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Federal Reserve System.

Now Dr. Johnson, a member of the class of 1973, has provided leadership that will transform our Sorrell College of Business and, indeed, our University as a whole. Dr. Johnson convinced BB&T and the Charles G. Koch Foundation to join him in making a major gift that will create the Manuel H. Johnson Center for Political Economy at Troy University. The Johnson Center will be devoted to the study of economic freedom and the role it plays in the betterment of society. It will also provide a center of excellence for the College of Business and enhance the overall academic standing of the University. Trojans worldwide owe Dr. Johnson, BB&T and the Koch Foundation a debt of gratitude for their investment in Troy University.

This issue also contains the names of several thousand other TROY supporters who deserve our thanks as well. The annual honor roll of donors shows the depth and breadth of financial support that our University enjoys, which is critical in an era of diminishing state appropriations for higher education. The men and women listed on this roster are the true heroes of the Trojan Nation and I can’t thank them enough for their support.

While we are saluting outstanding Trojans, I call your attention to a story announcing our Alumni and Honorary Alumnus of the Year. This year’s honorees are: Nicholas J. “Nick” Cervera, Joseph D. “Danny” Grant, Bobby Ross Phillips and Honorary Alumnus Robert Earl Stewart.

In August of 2009 we were ecstatic when Forbes Magazine’s annual college rankings named Troy University the best public university in the state. Imagine our excitement this year when the Forbes Rankings named TROY the best university in Alabama, public or private, and named us 16th on their list of “Best Buy” universities in the nation. See page six for more information on this prestigious award for your University.

In closing, this edition includes a solicitation to all Trojans to become lifetime members of the Troy University Alumni Association. This is an outstanding way to show your Trojan pride and I encourage you to take this important step today. When you support your University, you add value to your degree. Thank you in advance for considering a life membership in your Alumni Association.

Sincerely,
Jack Hawkins, Jr., Ph.D.
