Building a legacy: Attending Troy University is a family tradition for Morrisons
By Nikki Roberson

One might say Troy University runs in Rodger Morrison’s family.

It all started back in 1982, when Rodger Morrison’s mother, Carolyn Bonifay, enrolled at then-Troy State University. Since that time, TROY has been the university of choice for several members of the Morrison family.

Morrison, an assistant professor of management information systems in the Sorrell College of Business on the Montgomery Campus, graduated from TROY in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in human resources management and later earned his Master of Business Administration in 2004. He is currently working toward a master’s degree in human resource management.

At present, Morrison, his wife Vicki and four of the couple’s five sons – Levi, Jeremy, Derek and David – are active TROY students. The TROY connection doesn’t stop there, however. In addition, Jeremy Morrison’s fiancee, Lauren Hester, Rodger Morrison's sister and brother-in-law and brother and sister-in-law are also currently enrolled at TROY.

“I was astonished when I learned how many people we have in our family that have attended TROY; relatives that I know and those that I don’t. TROY is just a part of who we are,” Rodger Morrison said. “Some families attend a particular school and are huge fans. My family attends TROY.”

The TROY tradition has also given rise to another tradition for the Morrison family.

“When one of us graduates, we all gang up at IHOP for a late dinner. From the looks of it, we will do this at least once or twice a year for the next four or five years,” Morrison said. “Most of our group is starting with an associate’s degree, moving to the bachelor's degree, and then to obtain a master’s degree. This will make for a lot of pancakes.”

Roberson, a senior broadcast journalism major from Ozark, is a student writer for the Office of University Relations.
