Blakeney, Brown head list of Trojans honored

TROY Head Football Coach Larry Blakeney was named Coach of the Year and junior quarterback Levi Brown was named Newcomer of the Year by Sun Belt Conference coaches after the Trojans claimed the Conference title and its second berth in the New Orleans Bowl in the last three years.

In addition, the Trojans placed eight players on the All-Conference first team list and five on the second team, while two players received honorable mention honors. Blakeney led the Trojans to an 8-5 overall record and 6-1 in conference play.

“This is a great honor for me,” Blakeney said. “It is also a great honor for our staff. We all work together, and our staff is very deserving.”

Brown took Conference Newcomer honors in spite of having played in just nine games, taking over the starting role after a knee injury sidelined starter Jamie Hampton. Brown threw for 1,775 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Trojans named to the All-Conference First Team were: senior offensive linemen Chris Jamison and Dion Small, sophomore receiver Jerrel Jernigan, junior defensive linemen Brandon Lang and Cameron Sheffield, junior linebacker Boris Lee, senior defensive back/linebacker Terence Moore and senior defensive back Sherrod Martin.

Earning second-team honors were: sophomore running back DuJuan Harris, senior defensive tackle Dion Gales, junior linebacker Bear Woods, senior defensive back Tavares Williams and junior placekicker Sam Glusman.

Senior wide receiver Kennard Burton and senior defensive lineman Steve McLendon earned honorable mention all-conference honors.
