A dream come true – TROY alumna Dakota Missildine lassoes title of Miss Rodeo USA
On Jan. 17, a dream came true for Troy University alumna Dakota Missildine.
The former captain of the Trojans women’s rodeo team was crowned Miss Rodeo USA during the International Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City, OK, becoming the 44th recipient of the honor.
Missildine, who earned her bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism in 2009, competed under the title of Miss Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo, but the road to the title began years ago.
“It is an amazing honor to be Miss Rodeo USA and realize that I’ve achieved something that I’ve worked essentially my entire life for,” said Missildine, the daughter of Pam and Todd Missildine of Grady.
The road leading up to Miss Rodeo USA began during the 22-year-old’s childhood. Her mother read her Rodeo News magazines as bed time stories, Missildine recalls. Her favorite stories were those of Miss Rodeo USA.
“It’s all very exciting; however, I still feel like the same Dakota,” Missildine said. “I think this is the key to being successful at anything we do. We must stay true to ourselves and be appreciative of the many blessings we have been given.”
In addition to the overall title, Missildine earned the Horsemanship, Speech and Photogenic awards.
As a member of the TROY rodeo team, Missildine competed in breakaway roping, goat tying and barrel racing and was a member of the 3.0 GPA Athlete Club, Student Athletic Advisory Committee and a sports anchor for TROY TrojanVision News, an award-winning student-led newscast on the University’s campus television station.
“My time spent at Troy University has helped shape me into the person I am today,” she said. “The skills I've obtained from serving on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, adding to class room discussions, being a sports anchor for TROY Trojan Vision News, competing on the rodeo team and being team captain have all benefited me in other areas of my life and made me a well rounded individual.”
