Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr., has been elected chairman of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Board of Trustees.
The election came during the 114th annual meeting of the accrediting agency held Dec. 8 in Atlanta and was effective Jan. 1. Through the Commission on Colleges and the Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (K-12), the Board is responsible for the accreditation of institutions, facilitating quality improvement and cooperation among institutions, and preserving the integrity and autonomy of member institutions.
“American higher education is the envy of the world in large part due to our accreditation system,” said Dr. Hawkins. “I am pleased to have an opportunity to serve in this capacity.”
Dr. Hawkins has served previously on the Commission on Colleges Board of Trustees’ Executive Council.
Chancellor Hawkins also has been named chairman of the Air University Board of Visitors.
Air University provides the full spectrum of Air Force education, from pre-commissioning to all levels of professional military education, including degree granting and professional continuing education for officers, enlisted and civilian personnel. It also operates the Community College of the Air Force, the Air Force Institute of Technology and houses the Muir S. Fairchild Research Information Center, considered the largest library in the Department of Defense.
“The Air University leadership is delighted to have Dr. Hawkins as Chair of the Board of Visitors,” said Dr. Bruce Murphy, Air University’s chief academic officer. “The partnership that has been built between Troy University and the Air Force over the years is testament to his commitment to our shared values in developing and delivering high quality education that prepares students for challenging responsibilities around the world.”
