Social media outlets provide opportunities to connect with alumni, friends

Social media Facebook

Social media such as Facebook and Twitter are proving to be popular ways for Troy University alumni and friends to connect with the University, as well as former classmates.

The University and its athletics department both make use of Social media as another way of providing news and information to the public.

The University launched its Facebook page (click the FaceBook link at www.troy.edu) during Homecoming weekend in October and had seen its fan following grow to more than 7,400 fans as of Feb. 23. The University’s redesigned Web site, which features links to the TROY social media pages on the homepage, have sparked recent growth in those numbers.

The TROY Facebook page has attracted fans from throughout the world. The top five counties in terms of fans at the end of February were: the USA, Vietnam, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates and Canada.

The top five cities in terms of fans of the University’s Facebook site at the end of February were: Dothan, Troy, Montgomery, Atlanta, GA, and Miami, FL.
Troy University athletics’ Facebook page (click on the Facebook link at www.troytrojans.com) has nearly 3,500 fans.

“We utilize Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to provide news and information on all of our athletics programs,” said Ricky Hazel, director of athletics media relations for TROY. “We want to make TROY athletics easily accessible to our followers and social media provides an excellent way to reach people.”

University organizations also are taking advantage of the networking opportunities available through Facebook, including the TROY Alumni Association, “The Sound of the South” marching band, the TROY cheerleaders and the TROY Rodeo Team.

In addition to Facebook, the University, its admissions office, athletics department and campuses and sites, make use of Twitter with requests from other TROY sites and organizations coming in daily.

TROY’s Twitter site (link found on www.troy.edu) has nearly 1,500 “followers” and includes links to press releases and information issued by the University. More information about available TROY Twiter sites is available by clicking the Twitter link on www.troy.edu.

In addition to Facebook and Twitter, the University and its athletics department make use of YouTube to share videos with the viewing public.

The University’s YouTube channel (click the YouTube link at www.troy.edu) features the latest series of Troy University television commercials, “Prepare for Tomorrow,” as well as past commercials featuring TROY alumni.

The TROY athletics YouTube channel contains video interviews with coaches and players, as well as videos produced to promote upcoming events.
