Troy University’s new fraternity village project is on track for completion in time for the fall 2010 semester.
In November, Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr., and other University leaders officially broke ground on the $8 million project, which is replacing outdated structures along Pell Avenue to house the University’s Greek men’s organizations.
As part of the project, seven fraternity houses are being constructed and leased from the University by each fraternity.
“Not only does it take a village to raise a child, it takes a village to support our Greek system,” Dr. Hawkins said. “This new village will reshape our Greek System forever, and I believe it will make us a stronger University.”
In all, seven 8,517 square-feet two-story houses are being constructed in a traditional neighborhood-styled development with classical forms used on the porches and roofline.
While not all identical on the exterior, each house will follow similar floor plans with bedrooms, a chapter room, a social room and laundry facilities. The social rooms will be served by small warming kitchens.
The housing project will provide 24-bed capacities per house. A curved street will run behind the houses for access to houses and will provide parking for fraternity members, guests and staff. A front-side promenade walk will link the houses with Pell Avenue, a common green area and each other.
Herb Reeves, dean of students, said the project was on track to be completed and ready for occupancy for the fall 2010 semester.
“It has been a long time coming,” Reeves said. “It is going to be a welcomed addition to Greek life and the campus as a whole.”
Whaley Construction of Troy is the project’s general contractor and McKee and Associates of Montgomery are the architects.
The project is being financed as part of the University’s 2009 bond issue that will also provide funding for a new dining facility and a multi-purpose arena.
