Davis Theatre: Commemorative print, Sounds of the Season concert to raise funds for historic venue

Troy University’s Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts has provided a unique venue for entertainment in downtown Montgomery for more than 25 years, and patrons now have three new ways to show their continued support.

Originally opened in 1930 as a “movie palace,” the Paramount Theatre closed its doors in 1976. The facility was purchased and reopened by the University in 1983, and the theatre was restored internally and externally and fitted with state-of-the-art audio and lighting.

Each year, through its Subscriber Series, the Theatre hosts amateur and professional musicals, dramatic productions, chamber music and symphony orchestra performances, dance and ballet performances and instrumental performances of all types. However, running the Theatre and bringing in quality productions to the community is not covered by ticket sales alone.

Now donors have the opportunity to purchase a print of the Davis Theatre created by Alabama artist Larry Strickland. The print is available for $123 in recognition of the University’s 123 years of service.

In addition, a special “Sounds of the Season” concert, “Illuminations of Light and Remembrance,” will be presented by the University’s College of Communication and Fine Arts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9. The performance will include music, dance and theatre featuring the talent of more than 300 students and 20 faculty members from the University’s John M. Long School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance.

The performance will include the Collegiate Singers and Concert Choir, Symphony Band, Gospel Choir, Theatre Ensemble, Musical Theatre Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and the Repertory Dance Ensemble and will feature both traditional and contemporary Christmas music.

Single tickets for the concert will go on sale Sept. 20 for $25 for main floor seats and $15 for balcony seats. Special reserved packages, including a print, two tickets to the show and two tickets to a private pre-show reception, will also be available for $250.
