Das receives Malone Award

A Troy University professor from Montgomery has been awarded the University’s highest faculty award.

Dr. Sunil R. Das, a professor of computer and information science on the Montgomery Campus, was bestowed the Wallace D. Malone, Jr., Distinguished Faculty Award by Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr., and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Ed Roach during the University’s annual Faculty and Staff Convocation.

“Our honoree is an outstanding scholar and teacher,” Dr. Roach said in his introduction. “We are very fortunate at TROY to have a scholar of this caliber.”

Designed to recognize those who have exhibited excellence through outstanding teaching, public service, publications and research, the Wallace D. Malone Award is presented annually to a full-time TROY faculty member. Recipients are first nominated by their deans, department chairs or their peers, and then selected by an award committee for the honor.

“I am very honored and was very surprised to receive the award,” said Dr. Das, who was unaware of being named the recipient until the announcement by Dr. Roach. “This is a tremendous recognition by my colleagues and I am humbled by the honor.”

Full-time faculty members from any TROY campus or site are eligible for the award, which consists of a trophy, a $1,500 cash prize and a medallion to be worn with academic regalia. The award is made possible through a $100,000 endowment by the SouthTrust Corp. made in honor of  Wallace Malone, former chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of SouthTrust. Malone served as a TROY trustee from 1975-1995.

Dr. Das, who joined the TROY faculty in 2003, earned his doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Calcutta (India). He was professor emeritus of the University of Ottawa’s School of Information Technology and Engineering and has been associated with the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, National Chiao Tung University of Taiwan and the University of Calcutta.
