The Troy University men’s and women’s basketball teams both face challenging schedules in the 2009-10 season.
Men’s Head Coach Don Maestri calls his Trojans’ non-conference schedule the “most competitive” since TROY joined Division I competition.
“How we fare in those games will have a lot to do with how we fare in the conference,” Maestri said. “If we can be competitive in those games, then we will be able to be competitive in the conference.”
Part of that non-conference schedule includes eight straight road games.
Maestri hopes that stretch of games will serve the Trojans well when they begin conference play.
“The Sun Belt Conference, to me, never changes. It is always competitive,” Maestri said. “Every year any team in the league can beat any other team.”
The women’s basketball team’s schedule is equally challenging. The women will face three teams that won their conference championships and participated in the NCAA Tournament, including in-state rival Auburn University.
Like Maestri, women’s Head Coach Michael Murphy hopes a challenging non-conference schedule will provide a boost for the Trojans when they begin Sun Belt Conference play in December. The TROY women return two full-time starters and two others who saw action in the starting line-up from last season’s team that finished 16-14 overall and second in the East Division. Seniors Alyce Shearing and Brittnie Davis return to the starting line-up for their senior season, with Davis returning for an extra year after graduating this summer. They are joined by junior Donette McNair and sophomore Kirsten Smith as players who have experience in the starting line-up for the Trojans.
