Stewart, Davis inducted into Wiregrass Hall of Fame

Former TROY Athletic Director Robert Earl Stewart and Trojan Head Softball Coach Melanie Davis were recently inducted into the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame.

The duo was honored as part of the 2010 class of inductees during a banquet at the Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center in Dothan in July.

Stewart, an associate professor emeritus of finance at the University, served as TROY’s athletic director from 1974 until 1991. During that time, the Trojans won two football national titles, two baseball national titles and came just short of making a final four appearance in men’s basketball.

“I’m a financial guy,” Stewart said. “I had never coached before. I wasn’t going to coach either. I told our coaches that they handled stuff on the field, and I handled stuff in the office.”

Davis, entering her 17th season as head coach of the softball program, currently leads all TROY coaches in wins with 647 for her career. She has posted eight 40-win seasons in her tenure at TROY, including a school-record 52 victories in 1995.

In 2010, Davis directed the Trojans’ softball team to the championship game of the Sun Belt Conference tournament before finishing as the tournament runner-up.
