Trojan for life – David Marsh takes helm of Alumni Association
By Matt Clower

It took only one visit to Troy University to make new Alumni Association president David Marsh a Trojan for life.

After attending band camp at TROY while in high school, Marsh said he left determined to come back to Troy University as a student.

“I knew that was where I wanted to go,” Marsh said.

Marsh graduated from Troy University in 1980 and has been actively promoting TROY in the Birmingham area ever since. He is not shy about sharing his love for his alma mater.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I am all about TROY,” Marsh said.

Marsh helped form the first alumni club in the Birmingham area in the early 1990s and has played an active role in marshalling support for TROY in the area. He was elected to the Alumni Association Board of Directors in 2002.

“I was very flattered when I was selected to serve on the board,” Marsh said. “It was another way I could give back to my University.”

Among Marsh’s goals as president of the Alumni Association will be finding new ways to reach out to younger alumni.

“We really need to reach out to and involve our alumni that are in their late 20s and early 30s,” Marsh said. “Improved communications with all of our alumni will be a high priority.”

To reach that goal, Marsh said the Alumni Association will need to look at new ways to communicate with TROY graduates, particularly online.

“We need to constantly evolve our Web site and look for other communication tools,” Marsh said.

In addition to improving communication with alumni, Marsh said he hopes to see the Alumni Association continue the great relationship it has with the University’s administration.

“Dr. Hawkins, Dr. Schmidt and Dr. Laliberte have been extremely supportive of the Alumni Association and our initiatives. There are many ways the Alumni Association can work with the administration to promote TROY. We are also very fortunate to have an excellent Alumni Affairs Executive Director in Faith Ward,” Marsh said.

Marsh, a project manager in regulatory compliance with Southern Company, lives in Hoover with his wife Melissa. They have two children: Ben, who is a student at TROY, and Ellen, a freshman at Spain Park High School.
