On the bookshelf: TROY alumna Farris pens book to aid bookkeepers, accountants for nonprofits

A Troy University graduate has written a book to aid those working with bookkeeping for nonprofit organizations.

Sharon Farris, a 1998 summa cum laude graduate in accounting, has published the book “Nonprofit Bookkeeping & Accounting for Dummies.”

“I wrote this book for the nonprofit director and manager, as well as the nonprofit bookkeeper and accountant, to help them be better prepared to deal with day-to-day transactions and any sticky situations that may crop up along the way,” Farris said. “It is designed to help with everything anyone needs to know to operate a nonprofit according to generally accepted accounting principles. It covers information about the steps to file payroll taxes and tax information and also explains how to research and manager federal grants.”

Farris, a grant consultant and author with more than 10 years professional experience in state government, is founder and president of Farris Accounting and Consulting Training Services (FACT$), a consulting firm that specializes in training, writing and managing grants and providing contract management and financial services for nonprofit, social service, government and faith-based organizations.

Farris also serves as a peer reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools and previously served as an instructor at Auburn University Montgomery and as a grants administrator and accountant for the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center.

A nationally recognized speaker and trainer, Farris has presented workshops for the Governor’s Commission for Action in Alabama’s Black Belt, the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development, the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiative, the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Employed Women, the United Way of Alabama and the National Association of Grant Professionals, among others.

Her book is available at FACTS.com, Barnes&Noble.com and Amazon.com.
