Memory honored: Academic building on Phenix City Campus named for Dr. Curtis Pitts

The Troy University Board of Trustees has voted to name an academic building at the Phenix City Campus in honor of founding administrator Dr. Curtis Pitts who passed away in March.

Board members approved the resolution during the group’s spring meeting in Troy. The building housing the College of Education at the Phenix City Campus will be named “Curtis Pitts Hall” in memory of Dr. Pitts’ service, dedication and leadership.

Trustee John D. Harrison praised Dr. Pitts for his steadfast support of TROY over the years.

“He was always a number-one stalwart supporter of the University,” Harrison said. “He was truly a great Trojan.”

Trustee Allen Owen said Dr. Pitts’ leadership was instrumental in the development of the Phenix City Campus as a leading institution for non-traditional students in the Chattahoochee Valley.

“Here we are today with a beautiful campus and excellent academic buildings and we hope to do even more in downtown Phenix City,” Owen said.

Dr. Pitts was the chief administrator of the Phenix Campus since its establishment in 1975. He passed away on March 31 at a hospital in Charlotte, N.C., where he had been recovering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident last year.

Highlights of Dr. Pitts’ tenure at Phenix City include a successful $1 million fundraising campaign that exceeded its goal in a year, the establishment of the landmark “live class on tape” distance-learning initiative and the construction of three academic buildings and one maintenance building.

Dr. Pitts also laid the groundwork for a proposed future academic complex to be built on the Phenix City Riverfront.

Prior to his career at TROY, Dr. Pitts spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His skill as a fighter pilot during Vietnam was recognized with several awards including the Barry Goldwater Top Gun Award, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star.
