State University names Chancellor’s Fellows for 2001 |
Three
professors and a staff member of the Troy State University System
have been named Chancellor’s Fellows for 2001.
Beverly Gibson and Donna Jacobs of Troy State University, Janet
McQueen of Troy State University Dothan and Christopher Randall of Troy State
University Montgomery are members of the 2001 Chancellor’s Faculty and
Staff Fellowship Program, announced Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor of the
TSU System.
The purpose of the Chancellor’s Fellows program is to
help faculty and staff enhance their leadership skills and increase their knowledge
and understanding of the programs and operations of the TSU System, said Dr.
Shirley Woodie, program coordinator and director of the Institute for Leadership
Development.
“Fellows work with a senior-level administrative mentor,
attend seminars dealing with current issues in higher education leadership and
complete a project that addresses an issue in the Troy State University System,” Woodie
said.
The Chancellor’s Fellows program began in 1995.
Beverly Gibson, an assistant professor of English at TSU, joined
the university in 1991. She is a resident of Troy.
Gibson received her bachelor’s degree in English from
Converse College, her master’s degree in English from the University of
Virginia and her doctorate in English from Auburn University.
“My interest in the Chancellor’s Fellows program
stems from a belief that in order to design and present the best possible academic
programs for Troy State University students it is necessary to understand the
workings of such programs within the larger context of the institution as a whole,” Gibson
said. “Only then can these programs function at an optimum level.”
She is a member of the Modern Language Association, the Association
for Eighteenth-Century Studies and the Alabama Council of Teachers of English.
Donna Jacobs, chair of the department of curriculum and teaching
and associate professor of kinesiology and health promotion, began her teaching
career at TSU in 1992. She is a resident of Troy.
Jacobs received her bachelor’s degree in health, education
and recreation from the University of Alabama, her master’s degree in physical
education from Jacksonville State University and her doctorate in health, physical
education and recreation from the University of Alabama.
Jacobs said that working with administrators of the Troy State
University System will be an opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals
and experienced leaders.
“The fellowship program will allow me the opportunity
to collaborate with leaders in our own System and establish relationships that
could lead to program improvements,” Jacobs said.
She was the recipient of the 2000 “Thinking Out of the
Box Award” from the TSU College of Education and the 1996 Ingalls Award
for Excellence in Classroom Teaching at TSU. Jacobs is a member of the Governor’s
Commission of Teacher Quality and the American Association of Colleges and Teacher
Education and serves as the treasurer of the Delta Sigma Chapter of Phi Epsilon
Kappa honor society for physical education, health and sport management.
Janet McQueen has served as the human resource director at
Troy State University Dothan since 1993. She is a resident of Graceville, Fla.
McQueen received her bachelor’s degree in business administration
from Hawaii Pacific University and is pursuing her master’s degree in human
resource management at TSUD.
“The professional development gained from participating
in the Chancellor’s Fellows program will enable me to increase the efficiency
and service of the Human Resource Department at TSUD and give me the opportunity
to become more knowledgeable and aware of all parts of the System, how they work
independently and as a whole,” McQueen said.
She is a member of the Delta Mu Delta national business administration
honor society.
Christopher Randall is an assistant professor of psychology
and coordinator of the program in psychology, division of counseling, education
and psychology at Troy State University Montgomery. He is a resident of Montgomery.
Randall received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from
Wabash College and earned a master’s degree and doctorate from the University
of Kentucky.
“I believe this program will provide me a unique opportunity
to study the operation of the TSU System,” Randall said. “I look
forward to learning about decision-making and long-term planning in higher education
by observing senior-level administration.”
Randall is a member of the American Psychological Association,
Association of Heads of Departments of Psychology and the Midwestern Psychological
Association. He was nominated for the TSUM President’s Faculty Excellence
Award in 1999 and 2000.
