TSU to Host Eating Disorders Conference
A conference designed to help people recognize and cope with eating disorders is scheduled for Feb. 13 at Troy State University, with the public invited to attend each session.
As part of the conference, a free bone density screening will be held in the second floor of the Adams Student Center from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The test detects low bone mass, which can lead to the porous bone disease known as osteoporosis.
A panel discussion on eating disorders will begin at 2 p.m. in the Adams Student Center Ballrooms A and B. The panel will consist of Dr. Faith Weathington, former Director of the Counseling Center at TSU and current Assistant Professor in the TSU graduate counseling program; Dr. Alan Young M.D., an internist at Pike Internal Medicine in Troy; Dr. Edith Smith, Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Health Promotion at TSU; Fran Scheel, Troy State University Counselor and Amy Enfinger of Newton, a senior journalism major at TSU.
The conference will culminate with a comedy / lecture show "Two Thin" in The Claudia Crosby Theatre at 7:30 p.m. "Two Thin" presents the viewpoints of two people who have recovered from eating disorders and dispels common myths about anorexia and bulimia.
The conference is sponsored by Edge Regional Medical Center, TSU University Activities Council, Pike Internal Medicine, and Southeast Alabama Rural Health Associates.
Students and members of the community are invited to attend the conference. For more information, contact Terry Watkins of ERMC at 670-5261 or 670-5256.
