Ecologist to give talk Feb. 16 as part of TSU biology lecture series
Ecologist Dr. Debbie R. Folkerts will be the featured speaker when the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Troy State University continues its Frontiers in Science seminar series on Friday, Feb.16.
The lecture is set to begin at noon in the TSU Science Center, room 214. It is open to the public and free of charge.Folkerts, an assistant professor of biological sciences at Auburn University, will give the presentation "Pitcher Plants and Their Insect Symbionts." Pitcher plants are carnivorous plants that capture and eat small prey, such as insects, and support a complex community of invertebrates.
Folkerts will discuss the interactions of pitcher plants and insects and other invertebrates. The Frontiers in Science seminar series is designed to update scientists and the general pubic on research issues of national concern, said Dr. Glenn Cohen, professor and chair of TSU's Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. "Researchers play a pivotal role in the development of policy decisions because their research data create both opportunities and risks," Cohen said. "Without the data, the public and policy makers would have no objective means to evaluate either the opportunities or the risks." For more information, call (334) 670-3401.
