Fred Davis appointed provost of Troy State University
A longtime Troy State University administrator and professor has been tapped to serve as the university's chief academic officer. Fred Davis, a member of the TSU staff since 1970, was named provost Feb. 7. His appointment was announced by Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., TSU Chancellor. Davis, a resident of Troy, had been serving as vice provost. He replaces Owen Elder, Jr., who retired from the position last fall.
TSU will be well served by Davis' broad experience and great enthusiasm for the university, Dr. Hawkins said. "Fred Davis has been an invaluable part of the success and growth of Troy State University for more than 30 years," Dr. Hawkins said. "He is dedicated to serving our students and faculty and to further enhancing TSU's academic reputation. The university will continue to benefit from his leadership and vision."
Davis joined TSU as an English professor and served as chairman of the department of English from 1971-1985. He later worked as assistant to the provost and associate provost before being named vice provost in fall 2000. As provost, Davis is responsible for faculty recruitment, selection and appointment and will oversee faculty tenure and promotion reviews. He will manage the university's academic budgets and will also serve as the chief liaison between the university and entities such as accreditation agencies and certification boards.
Davis said his immediate goal is to maintain the university's academic quality, in light of the statewide education funding cuts announced Feb. 2. "Within the financial constraints of proration, my principal goal is to make sure that this institution suffers no diminution of academic quality or excellence," he said. "I also want to continue to stay the course of academic improvement which Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Elder set in motion." Davis looks forward to serving as the university's chief academic officer, he said.
"The highest calling of this institution is academics," Davis said. "I am flattered to have been chosen at this crucial juncture to provide some leadership for Troy State University." Davis holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Georgia. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Davis has published a number of essays, articles, reviews and poems in a variety of publications. He has served as a member of several accreditation committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. His honors include membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi national honor societies and the Outstanding Educators of America.
