Troy State University schedules Higher Education Rally for Feb. 26
Area residents will get an update on key higher education issues before the Alabama Legislature when Troy State University plays host to a special higher education rally on Monday, Feb. 26. Set to begin at 9 a.m. in the Adams University Center ballrooms, the rally is sponsored by Troy State University's chapter of the Higher Education Partnership, a statewide advocacy organization for public universities. University employees, students and the general public are invited to attend.
With public universities confronting 6.2 percent funding cuts and joining in an anti-proration lawsuit, higher education is facing a number of challenges, said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., TSU Chancellor. "This is a key time for higher education in Alabama, and for Troy State University," Dr. Hawkins said. "Higher education needs our support, and this rally is an excellent way for both the TSU community and local citizens to voice their concerns.
"This university is a tremendous resource, and it deserves our action and support." The rally will feature remarks from Gordon Stone, executive director of the Higher Education Partnership; Sen. Jimmy Holley, D-Elba; Rep. Alan Boothe, D-Troy; Dr. Jim Vickrey, co-chair of the TSU chapter of the Higher Education Partnership; and Dr. Hawkins. Several TSU students, including Student Government Association President Heather Hines, will also participate.
Dr. Debbie Fortune, co-chair of the TSU chapter of the Higher Education Partnership, urged community-wide support of the rally. "As educators, we owe the public our best efforts and ideas for addressing the challenges that higher education now faces," Fortune said. "The TSU community has voiced strong support of higher education in the past, and we look forward to that continuing in the upcoming rally." For more information, contact Fortune at (334) 670-5675.
