TSU vocal group advances to semi-finals for national competition
A Troy State University vocal group will advance to the second round of a national competition for a capella March 23 at Durham, N.C. on the campus of Duke University. The group, Glasshouse, is the only team from an Alabama university chosen for the competition, according to advisor John Jinright, an instructor in the John M. Long School of Music at TSU.
Five other groups from the southeast region competed again Glasshouse at the College of William and Mary for a spot in the national semi-finals. Glasshouse was ranked second overall at the competition. Vanderbilt's Swingin' Dores recieved first overall.
Tommy Newman of Hawkinsville, Ga. and Jeremy Thomas of Enterprise also received the award for best original arrangement "In A Little While". Other members of the group are Randy Boone, Phenix City; Rob McFarland, Wilmington, Del.; Tommy Kite, Lake City, Fla.; Calvin Scott, Hawkinsville, Ga.; and David Chastang, Greenville.
The event is part of the International Championship of College A Cappella, sponsored by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America and Varsity Vocals, Jinright said. Few groups will be chosen to advance to the national finals. The finals take place each April at Lincoln Center's Avery Fischer Hall in New York City.
"This is a great opportunity for these men," Jinright said. "I'm very proud they have advanced this far in their first year of competition."
Jinright said Glasshouse, a seven-man group, practices from five to 10 hours a week to prepare for competition. He said the students are able perform their own songs and arrangements, and students are judged on musical ability and performance.
