TSU to play host to African dance company
Troy State University will get a glimpse of traditional Zulu culture when the university plays host to a special performance by the Umdabu African Dance Company on Monday, Jan. 29.
Sponsored by the University Activities Council, the program is set to begin at 7 p.m. in the Claudia Crosby Theater. Admission is free of charge to TSU students. Faculty and staff are also welcome to attend.
Shea Phillips, director of Adams Center Student Services, said the dance program is part of an effort by the University Activities Council to promote three areas of concern for students and the TSU community as a whole: student study habits, cultural awareness and eating disorders. The effort also includes a Jan. 23 program on improving grades and study habits and a Feb. 13 program about eating disorders, Phillips said.
The Umdabu African Dance Company is a Birmingham-based dance troupe dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional Zulu culture through dance. Composed of nine male and female dancers and three drummers, the company presents dances within their social, cultural and historical context through a variety of theatrical vignettes.
Umdabu is led by renowned choreographer Johannes "Jomo" Xulu, whohas worked with a number of professional dance companies in South Africa, Great Britain and the United States, including the acclaimed Soweto Street Beat Dance Company and the Adzido Pan-African Dance Ensemble.
