| TSU
to hold 28th annual Concert Band Clinic |
Troy
State University will play host to six concerts in three days
as part of the 28th annual Southeastern United States Concert
Band Clinic, Feb. 1-3.
The highlight of the clinic is the induction of Col. John R.
Bourgeois, United States Marine Corps (Ret.), into the National Band Association
Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band Conductors. Bourgeois joined "The President’s
Own" United States Marine Band in 1958 and served as director from 1979 to 1996.
The induction will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 at noon in the Hawkins Adams Long
Hall of Honor.
Approximately 1,000 music educators, band directors and middle
and high school musicians will attend the clinic, according to Susan Smith, clinic
director and adjunct professor of music.
"As always we will bring some of the best young musicians in
the South to perform in our honor bands, plus we will have five outstanding concert
bands performing," Smith said. "Admission to all concerts is free and all performances
are open to the general public.
"The participating students not only get the chance to perform
but are also exposed to national caliber conductors and composers, visit the
TSU campus and play among their peers," Smith said.
Guest conductors are Keith Mann, director of bands at Red Deer
College in Alberta, Canada, and Col. L. Bryan Shelburne Jr. who assumed command
of the U.S. Army Band, "Pershing’s Own," in 1990. He is only the sixth
appointee to serve as leader and commander since the band’s formation in
1922.
Guest composer Steven Melillo has composed more than 880 works,
ranging from interactive video scores to three symphonies commissioned by Gerhardt
Zimmerman and the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. His scoring includes 12
feature films and music which has appeared on 28 network programs.
The three-day clinic also includes performance clinics, vendor
exhibits and sessions where band directors red newly published music. Public
concerts include:
Thursday, Feb. 1 - 8 p.m The Band of the Air Force Reserve
under the direction of Captain Alan Clark
Friday, Feb. 2 - 10 a.m. Ringgold Middle School of Ringgold,
Ga.; 1:15 p.m. - Houston County High School of Warner Robins, Ga.; 8 p.m. - Troy
State University Symphony Band.
