| Accomplished
painter Jere Allen and son to display work at TSU's Malone
Gallery |
The
works of an internationally acclaimed artist and his son will
come to Troy State University for a special show beginning Tuesday,
Jan. 16.Renowned painter Jere H. Allen and his son Jeff Allen
will present the show "In Transition" in the Malone Gallery of
Art.
The show, which is part of the gallery's yearlong art series,
will continue through Feb. 22. The artists will give a lecture about their work
in the Malone Gallery on Jan. 16, beginning at 4 p.m. A reception will follow.
The lecture and reception are open to the public. Call (334) 670-3396 for more
information.
The show will feature both collaborative and individual paintings
by the Allens, according to gallery director Pam Allen (not related to the visiting
artists). It will also offer a unique glimpse of artists in different stages
of their careers, she said.
"Jere is a well-known, established, skilled artist whose work
has been shown internationally, while Jeff is just getting started," Allen said. "I
like the idea of displaying their work together. It's an exciting opportunity
for the Malone Gallery."
Jere Allen's paintings are figurative and are "rich in color
and in expression," she said.
"He has a very romantic view of the human figure and has a
unique way of incorporating it in a composition," Allen said. "A lot of his subjects
are political, too. The commentary he makes through his art is not violent, but
the message is clear."
Whereas his father works with human subjects, Jeff Allen deals
more with still-life subjects and everyday objects, she said.
"Jeff uses bright colors, size and diagonal tension to explore
ordinary objects and their relationship to human senses," Allen said. "His works
provide an interesting contrast to his father's paintings."
Jere Allen, a native of Selma and resident of Oxford, Miss.,
recently retired as professor of art at the University of Mississippi. A past
Fulbright Scholar Grant recipient, his work has been shown in institutes and
galleries in Germany, China, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as Washington, D.C.,
New Orleans and 35 U.S. states. The 1993 winner of the Visual Art Award of the
Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters, he is represented by the Carol Robinson
Gallery in New Orleans.
Jeff Allen, a resident of Oxford, Miss., received a bachelor
of fine arts degree from the University of Mississippi. His work has been exhibited
at several galleries in the Southeast, including the Montgomery Museum of Fine
Art, the 2000 Regions Bank Show in Montgomery, the Tupelo Art Gallery in Tupelo,
Miss. and the Monstra Reunion Exhibit in Athens, Ga. He has also participated
in shows in Omaha, Neb. and Cortona, Italy.
The Malone Gallery is open 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m., Monday
through Friday. Call (334) 670-3391 for more information.
