TSU police to encourage seat belt use
Troy State University Police are planning activities to encourage students, faculty and staff to use vehicle safety belts, according to Chief Rod Anderson.
The department has planned roadblocks for Jan. 24-30 at points on Luther Avenue, Collegedale Avenue and Pell Avenue, Anderson said.
"Lt. Billy Schofield is coordinating these activities to promote seat belt use," Anderson said. "The point is not to issue citations, although we will do so if the officers believe it is necessary, but the main goal is to increase awareness of basic traffic safety."
Members of the force will also distribute literature on seat belt use at the Adams Center Jan. 31-Feb. 2, Anderson said. The TSU drive is part of the nationwide Buckle Up America campaign, sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Statistics provided by NHTSA show that seat-belt use saves approximately 9,500 lives annually in the United States, although only 68 percent of the driving population buckles up. If 90 percent of U.S. drivers would use seat belts, an estimated 5,500 lives would be saves each year, according to NHTSA
