| 'Sister
Schubert's' founder to speak at TSU Feb. 7 |
A
woman who turned the kitchen of her home into a nationwide, multi-million
dollar business will speak at Troy State University on Wednesday,
Feb. 7.
Patricia Barnes, founder and CEO of Sister Schubert's Homemade
Rolls, will be the featured speaker at the Sorrell College of Business Chair
of Free Enterprise Distinguished Lecturers series. The lecture is set for 10
a.m. in the Adams Center Theatre and is open to the public.
The Distinguished Lecturers series is designed to expose TSU
business students to outstanding business leaders, said Dr. Tom Ratcliffe, dean
of the Sorrell College of Business. Past speakers include June Collier Fletcher,
former CEO of National Apparel, and Steven McMillan, CEO of Sara Lee.
Barnes got her start baking the now-famous rolls for her family,
friends and church in Troy. In early 1992, she opened a business with three employees
and surplus equipment in her Troy home. Beginning with a single local account,
the business was soon producing 120 pans of rolls per week and quickly spread
to markets in Dothan, Montgomery and Birmingham. Now based in Luverne, Sister
Schubert's Homemade Rolls operates a 57,000-square-foot bakery, producing more
than 1.5 million rolls per day and shipping to thousands of stores nationwide.
The company was purchased by Lancaster Colony, a specialty-foods corporation
based in Columbus, Ohio, in September 2000.
Barnes, a native of Troy, is a member of the Business Advisory
Council for TSU's Sorrell College of Business. She also serves as a member of
the board of directors of the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame at Judson College.
Barnes lives in Andalusia with her husband, George, and son, Evans. She has two
daughters, Charlotte and Chrissie. |
