TSU to sign agreement with university in Sweden
Troy State University will sign an agreement with Halmstad University of Sweden for student and faculty exchanges in a move that administrators say will increase TSU's already significant international presence.
Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor of Troy State University, is scheduled to sign the agreement Thursday, January 11 beginning at 9 a.m. Ulf Ivarsson, Lecturer in Marketing, and Torben Svane, Assistant Dean of the School of Information Sciences, Computer and Electrical Engineering, will represent Halmstad at the ceremony.
"Troy State University is proud of its reputation as an international university," Dr. Hawkins said. "We have campuses in six nations other than the United States and students from more than 50 countries study with us in Troy. This agreement continues our commitment as a global university."
Dr. Curt Porter, Dean of International Programs, said students will be allowed to enroll at TSU and attend Halmstad for one or two semesters. "Students will enroll at TSU and will be exempt from any tuition charges at Halmstad," Dr. Porter said. "There is even the possibility of earning two degrees in four years-one from Troy State University and one from Halmstad University. Halmstad was founded in 1968 as an independent university, Dr. Porter said. Previously, it was part of the University of Lund, which was founded in the 16th century. Halmstad has an enrollment of 8,000 students in six colleges: Business, Health Sciences, Education, Science and Technology, Humanities and Social/Behavioral Sciences.
Porter explained that because most Swedes are bilingual, the University of Halmstad teaches courses in English in several disciplines, including business, computer science, information systems, e-commerce and Scandinavian culture.
