TSU vocal group chosen for national competition
A group of Troy State University music students has been chosen to compete in a national competition for a cappella vocal performance Jan. 28 at Williamsburg, Va.
The group, Glasshouse, is the only team from an Alabama university chosen for the competition, according to adviser John Jinright, an instructor in the John M. Long School of Music at TSU.
Jinright said five other groups from the southeast region will compete against Glasshouse at the College of William and Mary for a spot in the national semi-finals. Glasshouse was chosen for the competition after submitting audition tapes to a panel of judges. Nearly 200 groups from the United States and Canada audition each year, Jinright said.
The event is part of the International Championship of College A Cappella, sponsored by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America and Varsity Vocals, Jinright said. Several groups will be chosen to advance to the national semifinal competition in Durham, N.C. The finals take place each April at Lincoln Center's Avery Fischer Hall in New York City.
"This is a great opportunity for these men," Jinright said. "I'm very proud they were chosen in their first year of competition."
Jinright said Glasshouse, a seven-man group, practices from five to 10 hours a week to prepare for competition. He said the students perform their own songs and arrangements. Students will be judged on musical ability and performance.
The members of Glass House are: Randy Boone, Phenix City; Rob McFarland, Wilmington, Del.; Tommy Kite, Lake City, Fla.; Tommy Newman, Hawkinsville, Ga.; Calvin Scott, Hawkinsville, Ga.; David Chastang, Greenville; and Jeremy Thomas, Enterprise.
