| Bob
Howell presented special award at Troy State University |
Veteran
Alabama television anchor Bob Howell was honored Saturday, March
17 with Troy State University's second Distinguished Leadership
Award.
Howell, a 1971 graduate of TSU, was presented the award by
Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, at an awards banquet held in Sartain Hall
on the TSU campus. The honors banquet was the culmination of TSU's annual Alumni,
Parents and Friends Weekend/St. Patrick's celebration.
The Distinguished Leadership Award was created to recognize
the lifetime achievements of TSU alumni who have distinguished themselves through
exemplary work, philanthropy, leadership and service to their profession, community
and alma mater.
Howell is news director and primary anchor of WNCF television
in Montgomery as well as director of corporate news planning for the station's
owner, Broadcast Management Group.
"Bob has never forgotten the journalist's fundamental rule
of service: Give your viewers the news they need to make informed decisions about
their lives," Dr. Hawkins said in presenting the award. "That's a high calling,
and Bob Howell has performed it well."
Howell, a native of Geneva, began his television career at
WTVY in Dothan and moved to WSFA in Montgomery in 1976. He led WSFA to some of
the highest ratings in the nation for local news broadcasts. He moved to WNCF
in October 1999 and continues to anchor the station's three main newscasts each
weekday.
Howell said he was honored to receive the award. He said he
has many fond memories of attending TSU.
"I was on campus one fall day when they called the entire student
body into this building (the basketball arena) for a special assembly," Howell
said. "That day, Dr. Ralph Adams announced that we were no longer Troy State
College but that we were now Troy State University. I remember this day with
particular fondness because Dr. Adams turned out school for a week."
Howell continues to serve his alma mater as an adjunct member
of the faculty in the Hall School of Journalism. He frequently serves as a master
of ceremonies for campus pageants and other special events.
