Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow River Basins Clean Water Partnership formed
The Center for Environmental Research and Service (CERS) at Troy State University and the Wiregrass Resource, Conservation and Development Council coordinating the formation of a volunteer group to promote water quality on the Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow river basins.
Michael Mullen of the CERS said a working steering committee for the Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow River Basins Clean Water Partnership (CWP) was formed last month. He said the steering committee will seek additional members to form several subcommittees.
"The partnership will recruit members for subcommittees that will address technical issues, education issues and financial issues," Mullen said. "The steering committee members will also decide what if any subgroups it wishes to form. There will almost certainly be at least two subgroups- an Upper Choctawhatchee or Alabama CWP and a Lower Choctawhatchee or Florida CWP."
The Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow River Basins CWP is the eighth CWP organized in Alabama. "The main purposes for the CWPs are to bring together local communities, agencies and individuals - a broad cross-section of watershed stakeholders - for the purpose of restoring water quality and habitats in impaired streams, rivers, lakes or estuaries and preventing additional water pollution through voluntary actions," Mullen said. "However, the CWPs may also work to accomplish other goals, such as improving water-based recreational access and tourism or addressing water quantity issues in the basin." Members of the public interested in serving on one of the CWP committees should contact Mullen at 334-670-3624 or send e-mail to mmullen@trojan.troyst.edu.
