State University to participate in new distance-learning
program for Army |
Troy
State University has been chosen to participate in a new online
program that will help U.S. soldiers earn a college degree. The
program, Army University Access Online, was announced by Secretary
of the Army Louis Caldera last fall as part of an effort to boost
recruiting and retention of soldiers. Army University Access
Online is set to begin later this month.
Troy State University has partnered with "big five" public
accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, which is administering the program for
the Army, to deliver degree-track courses to participating personnel. TSU is
one of several institutions of higher education participating in Army University
Access Online, said Dr. Rodney Cox, Vice President of University College.
Through its University College division, TSU offers degree
programs at more than 50 sites - predominantly military bases - in 14 states
and five countries. University College is also responsible for administering
the university's distance-learning programs.
Troy State University's participation in Army University Access
Online is further evidence of the university's 50-year commitment to serve the
U.S. armed forces, said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor. He noted that TSU
was chosen last fall to provide distance-learning degree programs for the U.S.
Navy.
"Troy State University is recognized as one of the country's
leaders in distance learning, and the university's participation in Army University
Access Online further strengthens that position," Dr. Hawkins said. "It's an
honor for TSU to work with PricewaterhouseCoopers to serve the men and women
of the U.S. Army."
Dr. Cox said the program, which is provided free of charge
to Army personnel, will initially be implemented at three installations -- Fort
Benning, Ga., Fort Campbell, Ky., and Fort Hood, Texas - before expanding in
the fall. Soldiers who enroll in the program receive a laptop computer, printer
and Internet access. Classes will be conducted online.
TSU will deliver two associate degree programs and two bachelor's
degree programs initially, with plans for several graduate degree programs as
well. Cox said nearly 500 soldiers have registered to take courses from TSU this
spring.
