TSU to host statewide ‘Trio Day’ March 24
Troy State University will play host to an annual meeting Saturday, March 24 that brings together participants in Alabama’s federally funded "Trio" programs, according to Mary J. Griffin, who is coordinating the event.
The events will be held in Trojan Arena beginning at 9:30 a.m.
"Trio programs are federally funded programs that are designed to help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education," Griffin, who is director of the Upward Bound program at TSU, said. "They provide information, counseling, academic instruction, tutoring, encouragement and support."
Griffin said the event is designed for professionals who staff the "Trio" programs, as well as students who benefit from them. She said more than 700 people are expected to visit TSU for the event.
State Sen. Roger Bedford of Russellville will serve as the keynote speaker for the event. Bedford, who is serving his fourth term in the Alabama Senate, is chairman of the Senate Finance and Taxation General Fund Committee. State Rep. Alan Boothe of Troy will give the official welcome.
Trio programs include Student Support Services, Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, Upward Bound, Veterans Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Educational Opportunity Centers and Educational Talent Search.
For additional information, contact Griffin at 334-670-3669 or 1-800-345-4110.
