TSU to host Model United Nations March 15-16
Middle school students from across Southeast Alabama will learn about cultural diversity and international relations at the Southeast Alabama Model United Nations (SAMUN) at Troy State University Thursday, March 15-16.
SAMUN is designed to help students in grades five through eight gain an understanding of the United Nations, said Terry Qualls, program development specialist at the Inservice/Continuing Education Center based at TSU. Area middle school students will represent more than 25 countries at the SAMUN conference.
“While we are not able to do everything the way it is done in the U.N., our goal is for students to acquire a better understanding of other nations and a greater identity for all peoples of the world,” Qualls said.
The model United Nations, which will include students from Troy, Dothan, Ozark and Crenshaw County, requires students to develop and present a resolution to a committee. If the resolution passes, students then present it to the general assembly, which is made up of previous model United Nations participants. Students dress in the clothing of their representative country, prepare an introduction of the representative country’s native language and design a flag of the respective country.
SAMUN allows students to practice public speaking, parliamentary procedure and writing skills while incorporating classroom studies of geography, history, world politics and current events, Qualls said.
