TSU to recognize top students, faculty at Honors Convocation April 22

Troy State University will salute its outstanding students and faculty members at the annual Honors Convocation on Monday, April 22.
The event is set for 7 p.m. in the Claudia Crosby Theater on the TSU campus. Dr. Paul J. Ferlazzo, national president-elect of Phi Kappa Phi honor society and award-winning professor of English at Northern Arizona University, will serve as keynote speaker.
The convocation is designed to honor TSU students who have excelled in academics as well as extracurricular activities, including athletics, said Provost Fred Davis, the university’s chief academic official.
“The Honors Convocation is an important event in the life of Troy State University and one that is greatly anticipated each year,” Davis said. “These students have dedicated themselves to excellence and deserve to be recognized for their achievements. We will also honor some of our top faculty.”
More than 40 students from a range of academic disciplines, including education, business, arts and sciences, the fine arts and health and human services, will be honored at the convocation. Highlights include the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, which recognizes recipients for spiritual qualities in addition to academic and extracurricular achievements; and the Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching, which is presented to an outstanding member of the faculty.
Keynote speaker Ferlazzo, a resident of Flagstaff, Ariz., has been a member of the Northern Arizona University faculty since 1985. A former Fulbright Lecturer and National Defense Fellow, he has published dozens of critical essays and review articles on American literature and is the author of books on poet Emily Dickinson and the Fulbright Program. An expert on the role of communication technology in education, Dr. Ferlazzo has given presentations at several international and national conferences. His honors include the President’s Award from Northern Arizona and the Teacher-Scholar Award from Michigan State University.
As president-elect of Phi Kappa Phi, Dr. Ferlazzo heads the oldest and largest interdisciplinary collegiate honor society. Phi Kappa Phi has 900,000 members worldwide and inducts more than 30,000 new members from 281 select colleges and universities each year.
