TSU journalism alumni honored
    Five graduates of the Hall School of Journalism at Troy State University have received outstanding alumni awards for 2001-2002.
   Journalism Alumni Association President Kathy Morrow of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., presented the awards Thursday, April 11 at the 20th annual Journalism Awards Banquet held in the Trojan Center Ballrooms on the TSU campus.
   The honorees are:
  • Tony Harris of Prattville for public relations. Harris is the public relations coordinator for the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. He is a former staff member in the TSU Office of University Relations. He is a member of the Public Relations Council of Alabama and the executive board of the Alabama College System PR Association.
  • Ken Rogers of Troy, for print journalism. Rogers, who is sports editor of The Montgomery Advertiser, has also worked at newspapers in Andalusia, Dothan, Columbus, Ga., and Memphis, Tenn. In 1984, he was named TSU’s Outstanding Journalism Graduate.
  • Steve Powell of Little Rock, Ark., for broadcast journalism. Powell, a reporter with KATV in Little Rock, has won five Emmy awards. He is host of "Daybreak" and "Good Morning Arkansas." He also won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for reporting in Peru. A native of Pensacola, Fla., Powell worked for WAKA-TV and WSFA-TV in Montgomery before moving to Little Rock.
  • Jodi Bush Bell of Columbus, Ga., for advertising. Bell is the classified advertising and national advertising manager for the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. She is a 1992 graduate of the Hall School of Journalism with a print/ journalism/advertising degree. She began working with the Ledger-Enquiere 10 years ago as a sales representative and has held six different positions with the newspaper.
       In addition, Kyle Bozeman of Luverne received the first Merrill Bankester Outstanding Service Award presented by the Journalism Alumni Association. The award, named for the dean of the Hall School of Journalism from 1980-1996, is presented to a graduate for exemplary support of the school and the alumni association. Bozeman, a former member of the JAA board of directors, is manager of TSU-TV, the campus television station, and an adjunct instructor in the school of journalism.
