Troy State University presents research scholarships for
2002-03

Three Troy State University students have been awarded prestigious research scholarships for the 2002-03 academic year.
Brandon W. Bush and Kenneth Jake Hill are recipients of the Chancellor’s Fellowship and Sandy P. Gibson is the winner of the Trojan Pride Scholarship. The awards were announced at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Chancellor’s Research Symposium, held April 9 in the Adams Center Theatre for the Performing Arts.
The annual Chancellor’s Research Symposium highlights student-led research projects, said Dr. Allen Jones, assistant professor of history and a member of the CAS Chancellor’s Fellowship Committee.
The scholarships are designed to promote undergraduate and graduate student research and professional development, Jones said. Award winners work closely with faculty mentors throughout the year and present their research at the CAS Chancellor’s Research Symposium in the spring. Recipients are seniors or graduate students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The Chancellor’s Fellowship provides $1,800 and the Trojan Pride Scholarship $825 to fund the recipients’ research.

Chancellor’s Fellowship winners for 2002-03 are:
  • Bush, a senior from Brantley, is an English major. He will work with Dr. James Day, associate professor of English, on the research project “Work in Original Manuscripts and Paleography.”
  • Hill, a senior from Eclectic, is a history major. He will work with Dr. Kit Carter, assistant professor of history, on the research project “Innovations of the South during the Civil War Era.”

Trojan Pride Scholarship winner for 2002-03 is:
  • Gibson, of Montgomery, is a graduate student in the Environmental Analysis and Management program. She will work with Dr. Sigurdur Greipsson, assistant professor of biological and environmental sciences, on the research project “Phytoremediation in Restoration of Soils Polluted with Heavy Metals.”
