Two students win top service award at Troy State University

Troy State University students Samuel Allison and Cathy Payne are the recipients of the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for 2001-02.
Allison and Payne were presented the award April 22 during a luncheon on the TSU campus. They were also recognized at the university’s annual Honors Convocation held later that day in the Claudia Crosby Theater.
The Sullivan Award, which is presented at select colleges and universities throughout the United States, recognizes recipients for their excellence of character, humanitarian service and spiritual qualities. The award has been presented annually to a male student, female student and one non-student at TSU since 1981. Students, faculty and staff nominate candidates for the award.
Allison, a senior from Monroeville, is an accounting major. He is a University Honors Scholar and is a recipient of the Wal-Mart Future Leaders of America scholarship and the TSU Scholar’s Award scholarship. He is a member of the Mortar Board, Gamma Beta Phi and Alpha Lambda Delta national honor societies as well as Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He is a participant in the Alabama Collegiate Legislature program and is a charter member of the TSU chapter of the Circle K service club.
Allison has served as president of the TSU chapter of Baptist Campus Ministries, as treasurer of the College Republicans and as a senator in the Student Government Association. He is a resident director with the TSU Office of Housing and Residence Life.
Allison has served as a volunteer tutor with the Troy Housing Authority, working with elementary school children, and helps to build homes for qualifying families through the Troy-Pike Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
Payne, a senior from Wetumpka, is an education major. She is a member of national honor societies Phi Kappa Phi, Mortar Board and Gamma Beta Phi. She is a recipient of the All-American Scholar Award, the National Collegiate Education Award and the United States Achievement Academy Award, as well as the Sorority Academic Excellence Award from TSU. She is a four-year member of the National Dean’s List and the TSU Chancellor’s List, which requires a 4.0 grade point average.
A volunteer for the America Reads program, Payne has served as a tutor with Troy and Pike County elementary schools. She has worked with the Troy Housing Authority as a volunteer for its drug awareness program and has also volunteered with the Children’s Miracle Network telethon. She is a recipient of the Community Service Excellence Award from TSU.
Payne is a member of Campus Outreach, the Wesley Foundation, the Alabama Reading Association and the Student National Education Association. She is also a member of Chi Omega fraternity.
Donna Clark Schubert, assistant professor of journalism, was the faculty Sullivan Award recipient.
