Georgia artists to display work at TSU gallery beginning Sept.5
Troy State University’s Malone Gallery of Art will open its second exhibition of the school year with a show by Georgia artists Brian Rust and Kathleen Engler on Thursday, Sept. 5.
Opening day events include a 4 p.m. lecture by the artists and a reception, both in the gallery. The event is open to the public and is free of charge.
The six-week exhibit, which includes the large-scale drawings of Rust and the paper sculptures of Engler, will continue through Thursday, Oct. 17.
According to Jerry Johnson, professor and chairman of the Department of Art and Design, the show is as much about the beauty of the individual pieces as it is about the textural effect their interaction creates.
"I would say ‘texture’ is the unofficial theme of this exhibit," Johnson said. "The expanse of the paintings and the rawness of the sculptures are quite complementary of each other; texture is emphasized by their harmony."
Rust’s selections are strongly inspired by nature and draw much of their imagery from depictions of the environment. Engler’s latest series of works focuses on the "relationships between a mother and her child, both born and unborn."
"The sculptures almost look like humans that have shed their complete skins, like snakes do," Johnson said. "Their size gives them the sense of being confrontational, and yet they are only made of paper. The combination is one of power and fragility."
The idea for the show originated with Duane Paxson, an adjunct faculty member in the department of Art and Design. He recommended Rust and Engler after noticing their work at a group show in Georgia "had a natural compatibility."
Johnson believes this is the first time Rust and Engler have appeared together outside of a group exhibit. Both are making their first appearance in the Malone Gallery.
Rust is currently an associate professor in the department of Fine Arts at Augusta State University. He has completed more than 18 sculptural installations, six of which are permanent, throughout the United States and continues to participate in a number of sculptural and two-dimensional exhibitions. Engler’s work appears in numerous private and public collections across the United States, and she has created several commissioned public sculptures for her hometown of Augusta, Ga.
The Malone Gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. For additional information call (334) 670-3391.
