Dr. Hal Fulmer named Dean of Communication and Fine Arts at TSU
Troy State University has named Dr. Hal Fulmer as Dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, according to Fred B. Davis, Provost.
Dr. Fulmer comes to TSU following a 14-year career at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, where he had served as the Chair of the Department of Communication Arts since 1996.
"We were greatly impressed with Dr. Fulmer’s credentials and his outstanding record of teaching and administration experience," the TSU Provost said. "I was particularly impressed with his work as Georgia Southern’s Self-Study Director for their reaffirmation of accreditation for SACS (the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). He will provide excellent leadership for the College of Communication and Fine Arts."
Dr. Fulmer said the Dean’s position offered "another set of opportunities and challenges" than those he faced as a department chair.
"Troy had a lot to offer—good people, good size and a good vision," he said. "I thought this was a place I would like to be a part of."
Dr. Fulmer said he is looking forward to getting to know the faculty and students, which will help him set his long-term goals.
"Anytime you come into a situation where good things are happening, it’s best to do a lot of listening," he said. "Of course we want to build on our strong programs in speech and theatre, music and journalism and further develop our emerging art and design program. In everything we do, we’re going to have to ask, ‘What does it mean to the students?’ "
In addition, Dr. Fulmer said he is exploring ways to enhance alumni recognition and find new sources of revenue for the college’s programs.
Dr. Fulmer, who grew up in Albany, Ga., earned a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in rhetorical theory in 1985; a master’s in speech communication from the University of Georgia in 1982; a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Georgia Southern in 1981 and an associate’s degree from Albany Junior College in 1979.
He is serving a five-year appointment as the Executive Director of the Southern States Communication Association, responsible for activities of the 1,000-member organization.
