Phillips presented Trojan Award at TSU
Troy State University has presented the Trojan Award, the highest award given by the university, to Buzz Phillips, Director of Football Operations
Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr. presented Phillips with the award. The Trojan Award is honors special contributions to TSU by alumni, friends, faculty or staff.
"We wanted to honor Buzz Phillips for his contributions to Troy State University athletics," Dr. Hawkins said. "He has been a an integral part of our successful transition to Division I-A and exemplifies the very best of the Troy State University spirit."
Phillips is beginning his first year as the Director of Football Operations at TSU after joining the staff in the spring of 2001 as Director of Marketing.
"It came as a real shock to me that I received the award, but it is both exciting and gratifying to be recognized," Phillips said. "I am a true Trojan and have been since the 1960s and even before that. I look forward to continuing what I have done for many years to come."
He attended Troy State from 1967-70. During his time at TSU, he was a student assistant for the football team and was a member of the 1968 NAIA national championship team. He was also a member of the baseball team in 1968 and 1969. A native of Montgomery, Phillips has been married for 32 years to the former Nancy Hart, a TSU alumna. The couple has a daughter, Kerri, and a son, Scott.
Before returning to TSU to join the athletics staff Phillips spent 10 years at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. His first five seasons he served as an assistant baseball coach before becoming head men’s basketball coach and reviving a program that had been defunct since 1979. He also served as assistant athletics director for five years.
In 2000-2001, Phillips guided Huntingdon to the National Small College Athletic Association national title and was named "Coach of the Year by the NSCAA. Before entering the college coaching ranks, Phillips coached at the high-school level for 20 years.
"We are extra proud for Buzz to have received this award and to have him as part of our program, both as an employee and as a tremendous supporter," Director of Athletics Johnny Williams said. "He is a big part of our Trojan family."
