TSU student gets scholarship from American Sports Medicine Institute
Caleb Gardner, a Troy State University student from Greenville, has been awarded an American Sports Medicine Institute Scholarship for the 2002-2003 academic year.
Gardner, who is scheduled to graduate in 2003, is majoring in athletic training at TSU. John "Doc" Anderson, Chair of the Department of Athletic Training at TSU, said this honor reflects well on Gardner and on the program.
"We are proud of the fact that 50 percent of our students in Athletic Training graduate with honors and that 82 percent of our graduates are certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification," Anderson said. "These are measures of an academically competitive program, and Caleb Gardner is one of the best of the best. We are proud of Caleb and we thank ASMI for its support."
Gardner will receive a $1,000 Athletic Trainer Scholarship Award
from ASMI, according to Dr. Gil Etheridge, Executive Director.
"We were extremely impressed with Caleb Gardner’s academic record and participation in extracurricular activities at Troy State University," Dr. Etheridge, who is also a certified athletic trainer, said. "He is an outstanding candidate and we are pleased to be able to award him this scholarship."
ASMI’s mission is to improve the understanding, prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries through research and education. The Athletic Trainer Scholarship Award was established in 1994 to encourage outstanding students who are interested in pursuing studies in Athletic Training. ASMI is headquartered in Birmingham.
Gardner, voted Outstanding Freshman at TSU for 1999-2000, is a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society and is President of the Athletic Training Club. He is also a member of Campus Outreach and Forest Home United Methodist Church.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Gardner of Greenville. Jimmy Gardner, a 1970 graduate of TSU, currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Alumni Association.
