TSU conducting baseline study of Conecuh River System
Fishing the Conecuh River may sound like a summer vacation, but it’s all in a day’s work for a Troy State University professor and his students.
Dr. Michael Stewart, ALFA Eminent Scholar in Biological Science and Environmental Analysis and Management, and several students in the Environmental Sciences Program and the master’s degree program in Environmental Analysis and Management have spent the last three weeks studying the Conecuh and Sepulga rivers watershed in Covington County. Their mission: Collect data on the rivers system’s animal and plant life and assess the ecological health of the waterway.
The TSU team is performing a baseline study of the river system as part of a contract with the Alabama Electric Cooperative in Andalusia, which is seeking federal re-licensing of Gantt and Point A Dam hydroelectric power plant. This is the most comprehensive such study ever performed on the Conecuh.
